The Secrets of Mangling Metaphors in an Off-Year

by Alex on Nov 9, 12:17 AM

Leave it to fundamentalist politicians to mutilate Jesus. Kansas Senator Sam Brownback on Saudi Arabia:

“THIS IS NOT A GOOD FRUIT SITUATION!”

It looks like the Republicans are getting punished for their bad behavior a bit at the polls in several key elections today. The White House is under investigation, the Iraq War shows no sign of ever ending in a million years, top Republican leaders are practically being sized up for prison wifery, and George Bush was willing to see New Orleans under the Gulf of Mexico. Remember where YOU were a year ago? Where were the scandals, the disasters and the indictments then?

Much has been made of the fact that these races have been super nasty and negative. Well, as one who has tried to watch sitcoms during this whole melee, I can say that I’ve seen these commercials. Here’s a sense of the tenor of political discussion at this point: an ad for Doug Forrester, the Republican for NJ governor, quoted Jon Corzine’s ex-wife as saying, “Jon did let his family down, and he’ll probably let New Jersey down, too.” Meanwhile, a Corzine ad featured a paralyzed teenager complaining about Forrester’s stance against stem cell research. In Virginia, a Jerry Kilgore ad alleged that Tim Kaine’s opposition to the death penalty meant he would not have executed Adolf Hitler. Kaine cites his Roman Catholic beliefs for his opposition to capital punishment, but insisted he would carry out death sentences because they are the law.

Now, people always bitch and moan about attack ads, but what’s so wrong with this? Some people want to kill fetuses, others want to kill criminals, and probably someone wants to kill paralyzed teens. Aren’t these people actually talking about issues, in a way? Do you want the guy who’s for stem cell research and abortion rights or the guy who’s for the death penalty and blastulas? Fernando Ferrer attacked Mayor Bloomberg for supporting Bush, and Rudy Giuliani came out for Forrester, and all I can say is that I believe in guilt by association. When any Republican wins anything anywhere, it only encourages them.

By the way, why do political women wear such horrible clothes? It’s like a uniform for the bovine liberation army. What’s Stepford brand First Fembot wearing there? A Mao suit? At least Teresa Heinz had some style. While we’re on the subject, these guys could get some cooler outfits too. Is it just that we don’t trust people who look too cool? I guess I could understand that. But we should have some folks from New Wave run for president. They’re old enough now, and they had a sense of decorum.
